Maurice was born in Melbourne, the first son of May and Arthur Stewart; he started school at the Kingsville State School in Footscray. When he lost his father in 1944 due to war injuries the family moved to Terang where they lived with grandparents until settling in Garvoc. Maurice attended the Terang State School and High School. As a child he suffered from asthma and on many occasions had to be admitted to hospital because of breathing difficulties. It was at this time it was suggested to him to take up cycling as this may help his asthma. When he was 18 he decided to join the Terang Amateur Cycling Club where he had immediate success winning in his second start. The race was over 50 miles in a combined event with the Camperdown Amateur Cycling Club. Maurice went on to have many more wins and within two years was riding off the scratch mark on both road and track

In February 1960 Maurice was killed at the Terang Recreation Reserve track whilst racing in a regular combined Terang and Camperdown event. At the time of his death he was employed by Mr Fred Pearce as a painter, Mr Pearce was devastated by the loss of his number one employee and most of all his ‘best mate’. He approached the Terang Cycling Club and the Stewart Family (who were still involved in cycling) about running a memorial race for Maurice. Fred donated the trophy (the same one used today) for the Memorial Race.

The high esteem, in which Maurice was held, was evident when one of the largest crowds seen at a cycling event attended the first memorial race.

The results of this 40 miles race were:- G. Lockwood (22mins),C. Hately (22mins) F. Togni (22mins). Winner’s time was 2hrs 2mins 4 sec. Fastest time S. Stewart (Scr) 1hr 44 mins 40 secs.
