Established in 1882, The Warrnambool Cycling Club is just a short ride out of town, situated at the Wangoom Recreational Reserve. The club currently has 25 members and hosts three major events for the year which are the Glenn Cook, Greg Gleeson Memorial Races, as well as the 100 km Classic planned for September.
The races are handicapped events, so in theory, if we’ve done our job right everybody should be in with a chance of taking out line honours – which is a much nicer prospect than getting spat out the back when you’re still miles away from home. Mind you, it’s not known as Windy Warrnambool for nothing, so it’s also unlikely you’ll find it a leisurely sunday morning ride!
Of course, as the City of Warrnambool is the home of the Melbourne to Warrnambool Classic (until recently the longest one-day race in the world, and also the 2nd oldest one-day race in the world) the club has a deep history and involvement with the annual event. In the past, two club riders have added their names to the honour role with wins in the prestigious event: Michael Lynch in 1986, and Jamie Drew in 1999 & 2002.
Also the club has produced 2 Olympic Game representative with Michael Lynch & Michelle Ferris. Michael making the Road Cycling Team at the Los Angeles Games in 1984 and Michelle making the Track Team in Atlanta 1996 where she won the Silver medal in the Woman’s Sprint and again making the Track Team for Sydney 2000 where she also won Silver in the 500m Time Trial.
Hi there looking to join a cycling club so I can participate in longer group sessions and discover nearby routes with some elevation. Currently training for Melbourne 70.3 Ironman.
Thank you.
Hi Larisa,
Royal Bikes are the best contact to know the different training groups, they will know from where and when they leave and which one might be best suited to your ability.
